The story of Two Rabbits
OUR COMMUNITIES
Two Rabbits works alongside indigenous Baka communities in Cameroon to create preschool programs that honor their language and culture.
Baka children are steeped in a rich traditional education that prepares them to be stewards of their forest home, as their ancestors for generations before them. But today, deforestation threatens their way of life. They need schooling to gain literacy skills to understand and defend their rights, while also pursuing their forest-based education. A Baka father once said that this is as impossible as “chasing two rabbits at once.”
Our Solution
Two Rabbits is designed by and for the Baka to bring both “rabbits” within reach. There are three pillars to our model:
We create preschool curriculum rooted in the Baka language and forest environment, together with Baka musicians, educators, and storytellers.
We record this content in interactive audio form onto crank- and solar-powered mp3 players, creating a Sesame Street-like experience for children.
We train community-nominated youth to use these recordings to deliver quality learning experiences despite their own low literacy levels.
Our Impact
We have implemented our model with thousands of children in dozens of Baka villages to date. We conducted a complete impact evaluation that found our program boosts child outcomes across developmental domains.
